As part of class LCo and EMJ’s life cycle topic in Science, we have been looking at the life cycle of a chicken. On Monday, the children were very excited to see 11 eggs arrive in an incubator for us to look after for two weeks.
We have been recording observations in our chicken diary. Class LCo and EMJ have been very responsible in taking care of the eggs. Together, we wrote up a risk assessment and all the children have been demonstrating great care.
On Wednesday we noticed that the “pipping” process had started and the chicks were showing signs of hatching. 5 of them hatched overnight and we have been very lucky to watch a recording of the process.
On Friday we said, “Hello” to the new chicks. One of them has a poorly leg so we have had class discussions on how we could help it. All the children took turns in holding or stroking the chicks. We have the chicks for a further week and we will be adding more to our chick diary’s as we go.
